Additional Details

One of the final works by the noted illustrator Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), a Jewish immigrant from Poland, as a tribute to his adopted nation. It is illuminated with seals of the 48 states and the territories, Revolutionary War battle scenes, and a portrait of George Washington. When the original art was unveiled in a 1950 Independence Day ceremony in Szyk's hometown, he expressed the hope that it would find a home at the Library of Congress. It was featured in the 1999 Library of Congress exhibit "Arthur Szyk, Artist for Freedom: Masterpieces of Illumination." We trace only one other example of the print sold at auction, in a Swann sale, 7 August 2013, lot 168.
