number 247 of 325 copies. Degas had conceived a series of monotypes to be reproduced in heliogravure in reduced format; this is the only book by Degas specifically planned for that purpose. The project was shelved for many years until the proofs were sold to a group of collectors who let them be reproduced for this volume. The plates were beautifully engraved and printed by hand by Maurice Potin, achieving Degas's original intention. The Artist and the Book 71.
