first edition in parts of one of the great works from the renaissance of dutch book decoration. Van den Vondel's 17th century masterpiece Gysbrech van Aemstel was written for the opening of the Amsterdam city theater, the Stadsschouwburg, in 1638 and became the traditional opening play of each theatre season for many years.
