This is a matched set of two beautifully rendered animation clean-up drawings of the villainous Ursula the Sea Witch from the landmark 1989 Disney feature The Little Mermaid. The artist is Terrey Hamada (then Terrey LeGrady), who initialed the drawings TL, which was standard practice for clean-up artists to get credit for their work. Hamada worked on many classic 1980s Disney films in addition to The Little Mermaid, including Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver and Company.
Clean-up is the final phase of the traditional animation drawing process, which would have then been transferred onto cels to paint and photograph for the final film. The role of a Disney clean-up artist required incredible drawing skill and sense of line to turn the lead animators' (often quite messy) rough drawings into perfectly "on model," screen-ready drawings. These renderings are brimming with personality and perfectly capture Ursula's diabolical nature.
