The Washington National Monument Society was founded in 1832. Construction on the monument began in 1848. By 1850, the monument was only 52 feet tall, and funds had been exhausted. Despite this inspirational appeal, with its endorsement signed in type by President Taylor and three former presidents, the monument was not completed until 1884.
