Large folio, 25 x 20 inches, 1/2 calf, worn but sturdy; a few items detached or removed, much plus additional material laid in. Washington and elsewhere, compiled circa 1919-23 with material dating back to 1773

The album was apparently compiled by Josephine A. Patten (born 1863), from a well-to-do Washington family. The first half is filled with commercial photographs of Italian art and architecture, including 2 large engravings dated 1773 and 1811; much of the remainder is devoted to Washington society, and particularly to the presidential families. Highlights include two 1920 Warren G. Harding campaign posters, each about 17 x 11 inches Circular studio photograph of Pope Pius X A pair of large photographs of presidential daughter Alice Longworth Roosevelt by Histed, 1902-3 A 1910 letter from the Duchesse de Lévis-Mirepoix A series of 6 photographs of the Senate Ladies Red Cross Unit, possibly including future First Ladies Florence Harding, Grace Coolidge, and Lou Hoover, some with troops and 4 small landscape watercolors by J. Rigal, 1921.
