Additional Details

This financial summary of the small British colony in the Leeward Islands is headed "Abstract of the Quarterly Contingent Account of the Government of Dominica." John Matson (1746-1805) was president of the island's council, and became acting governor after the death of the previous governor. Matson's main expenses were for the support of a British regiment "and distressed emigrants," with smaller sums for the repair of the government house, fees to private schooners which delivered official messages, and the printing of a "notice to persons who may import Negroes." The expenses were covered by the sale of a government sloop and 132 barrels of pork.
