(DOUGLASS, FREDERICK.) Heroes of the Colored Race. Chromolithograph, 21x28 inches, with large center portrait of Frederick Douglass; to his right and left, ex-senators Hiram Revels and Blanch K. Bruce; above and around them are numerous historical vignettes and smaller portraits.

Additional Details

A fine example of this rare chromolithograph celebrating three of the nineteenth century''s most important African-American statesmen. This copy is a "proof before letters" lacking the name captions beneath the portraits of Douglass, Bruce and Revels. The background vignettes contrast scenes from slavery days on the plantation, with scenes in the schoolroom and on the battlefield. A copy of this lithograph can be seen on the Library of Congress''s "African American Odyssey" exhibit website.
