2 certificates issued to one of the earliest druidical leaders in America, as well as 3 letters received. Most of the American druids mentioned in this collection were middle-class men from New York and Maine with advanced degrees, and without any recent Welsh ancestry. As for Davies, no one knows who he was, or what he was doing, but his legacy remains.
Includes: Certificate on vellum, 18 x 25 inches, issued by the Gorsedd Dderwyddol Beirdd Ynys Brydain (literally the Community of Druidic Bards of the Island of Great Britain) to James Davies, authorizing Davies to "perpetuate and propagate, in the Western Hemisphere of the World, the Druidic cause." Written mostly in Welsh, including some runic text, with the concluding paragraph in English. Signed by 16 members, including Myvyr Morganwg as Arch-Druid of Britain. Wales, winter solstice, 1876 Another smaller certificate on vellum, entirely in Welsh, naming James Davies and four other Americans, and signed by three officials.
