first american edition. This play was banned in England--the first work banned under the Licensing Act of 1737--but its republican message was inspirational to American patriots. In addition to the mention of Washington on the title page, the epilogue has a concluding note: "Surely the Americans may, with equal justice, glory in their deliverance from British tyranny, by his Excellency General George Washington."
