Additional Details

Willard was the longtime pastor of Third Church in Boston, and acting president of Harvard. Appended with its own title page is Colman's "A Poem on Elijah's Translation, Occasion'd by the Death of the Reverend and Learned Mr. Samuel Willard." Evans 1329; Sabin 59601. Early owner Pompey Allen was quite possibly the slave Pomp Allen who earned his freedom by serving with a Massachusetts regiment in the Revolution. Provenance: Pompey Allen (inscription on page 1); political leader and Harvard president Edward Everett (bookplate); gift from his son William Everett to the Meadville Theological School, 1903 (bookplate and inscription).
