Additional Details

An important work in the history of New England theology that would influence the leaders of the Great Awakening. Stoddard's work, first published in 1689, was much maligned by Increase Mather for his stance on infant baptism. Stoddard himself corrected and added additional material to this second edition shortly before his death. "Not so learned as the Mathers, he was more forceful a writer and more original as a thinker. As an ecclesiastical statesman he was unrivaled in his generation"--DAB. Regarding the inscription on the rear endpaper, the Boston earthquake of 1755, felt from Nova Scotia to Maryland, is still the largest seismic event ever recorded on the East Coast. Evans 3220; Sabin 91960.
