Scientist and inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) profoundly influenced modern life with the incandescent light bulb, and inventions such as the phonograph and motion picture camera. During his lifetime, the "Wizard of Menlo Park" acquired 1,093 patents and successfully marketed many of these products to consumers throughout the world.

Edison's own Edison General Electric Co. merged with Thomson-Houston in 1892, to become General Electric Co. (effectively removing him further from the electrical business). General Electric grew rapidly in Schenectady, where Thomas Edison had transferred his machine works in 1886.
