Carver's correspondent Ralph Ward Douberly (1912-2006) was a 20-year-old white poet. He thanks Douberly for his contribution to a recent testimonial volume--"I have no treasure that I prize more. Your letter, dear, is a perfect poem." He adds "Glad you liked the little painting. Some of my precious little family are catching the vision, and will be pioneers in the development of the New South. I have a marvelous little family." Moving on to current events, he observes "It is all right for the radio, papers, speech makers, etc. to try to make us believe that the depression is only a state of mind. They should be here in Tuskegee now, and see if they could convince us, when our only bank here closed its doors yesterday, and some lost everything they had." He concludes "How I wish I was near enough to give you and dear Billy a thorough massage with the oil, it would build you up."
