Richard Theodore Greener (1844-1922) was the first African-American to graduate from Harvard. His career is nothing short of amazing: Professor of Mental and Moral philosophy at the University of South Carolina, dean of Howard University's Law School; and later American consul to India and China, receiving one of China's highest honors for his help during the Boxer War and the Shansi Famine. Greener responds here to a request to provide biographies of great colored men for the Encyclopedia Britannica.
