Additional Details

The Howard Orphanage and Industrial School was founded in Brooklyn, NY in 1866, and relocated to rural King's Park on eastern Long Island in 1911. A coal shortage and unusually cold winter caused a disaster in January 1918, when the orphanage's pipes froze. Two children had their feet amputated from frostbite, and the orphanage closed due to the scandal. Included in this lot are three pamphlets from happier times: the annual report for 1912-1913 (24 pages) "Howard Orphanage and Industrial School: A Statement of Facts," circa 1912-15 (4 pages) and the program for a performance given by the children at the nearby Northport Theatre, 19 November [1914] (4 pages). None of these three publications have been traced at auction.
