Embroiderd circular banner, 20 inches in diameter, with two long narrow embroidered strips bearing the motto "Greensboro North Carolina" and "Agricultural and Technical College" each 50 x 4-3/4 inches, the circular piece embroidered with various colors of silk with the two long scroll-like pieces in blue and gold. a remarkable piece of embroidery and an equally remarkable survival. This circular banner with its two scrolls was probably made somewhere around the turn of the 20th century. "North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College was established as the "A. and M. College for the Colored Race" by an act of the General Assembly of North Carolina ratified March 9, 1891. It was in the fall of 1890, when the North Carolina General Assembly enacted a second Morrill Act that mandated a separate college for the colored race. (The College operated in Raleigh as an annex to Shaw University during the years 1890-1891, 1891-1892, and 1892-1893). A group of Greensboro citizens came together to make a permanent home for the institution. Members such as Dr. DeWitt, a black dentist, C. Benbow and Charles H. Moore donated 14 acres of land for the site and an additional $11,000 in cash that aided in construction of the buildings. This amount was supplemented by an appropriation of $2,500 from the General Assembly. The plan was approved on March 9, 1891, and the first building was completed in 1893: the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race (now North Carolina A&T State University) had found its new home."
