While most African Americans are Protestants i.e., Methodist Episcopal or Baptist, a significant community of approximately two million Catholics does exist. Founded in 1829, the order of Oblate Sisters of Providence was organized specifically to educate black children. This photograph shows the children of two schools in Charleston.
