Additional Details

Stanford first began accepting substantial numbers of Black students in 1965. Black70 was edited by Joyce E. King, who received her doctorate from Stanford in 1974. More than just a yearbook, it reflects on the campus tumult and national events of the preceding years. It includes spreads on campus visits by Amiri Baraka and Dick Gregory in 1967, the rise of the Black Panthers, the King Assassination, the birth of the campus Black Student Union, and much more. The 1974 "Yes We Can," named for a Pointer Sisters song, is less overtly political, and filled with images of campus life.
