(EDUCATION.) Photograph of a Boy Scout troop in Montclair, New Jersey. Photograph, 7¾ x 9¾ inches; minor wear including slight image loss around one boy's forehead. No place, circa 1927-1935

Additional Details

Troop 20 was founded as Montclair's first all-Black Boy Scout troop in 1927. George M. Fennell (1889-1974) was the troop's leader in its early years, before moving to New York City circa 1935. This image shows Fennell flanked by two older boys bearing flags and nine younger boys to their sides, with one of the flags reading "Mon[tcl]air." The photo is uncaptioned, but the flags and Fennell's face are good matches for another photo of the troop in "A Look Back: Honoring Troop 20" in Montclair Local, 29 February 2024.
