Additional Details

Straight University, after 1915 Straight College, was a historically black college that operated between 1868 and 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was founded by the American Missionary Association. Included in this small but rich archive are letters written to professor H. H. Swain, a number of flyers, tickets and memorabilia for sightseeing in and around New Orleans; menus from local restaurants, letters addressed to professor Swain, a wonderful booklet for "Colored People's Educational Day" with tickets for the event, and a rare brochure for a celebration of African American Emancipation Day, August 1, 1886. In addition to all of the wonderful memorabilia, there is a list of students and their overdue tuition, and other school-related material.
