Additional Details

The Dawes Academy in the Oklahoma Indian Territory was built and maintained by Hiram and Mary Elizabeth Dawes a New England couple. There were three teachers and the Dawes themselves to manage the first Negro school of the Chickasaw Nation. The Oklahoma Historical Society records the school as having approximately 30 students.
