(EINSTEIN, ALBERT) burnett, harry
Albert Einstein holding an Einstein marionette figure. Silver print, 3 1/4x5 1/2 inches (8.2x13.9 cm.) by Burnett, with handwritten notations on verso. 1931

Additional Details

From the estate of Harry Burnett, who operated a marionette theater in Los Angeles; to the present owner.

The puppet was created by Burnett , and the photograph itself was taken at California Institute of Technology, where Einstein was teaching. Einstein didn't think the puppet was fat enough, so he took a piece of paper from a pocket, wadded it up and put it under the the figure's smock. This crumpled paper, which had some equations written on it, was subsequently donated by Burnett to the California Institute of Technology.
