Additional Details

William, Prince of Orange, invaded England in 1688 in the Glorious Revolution, sending King James to flight. This declaration of rights drafted by the House of Commons was presented to William and Mary on 13 February. It is printed here with William's 15 February assent: "I had no other intention in coming hither, than to preserve your religion, laws, and liberties; so you may be sure, that I shall endeavor to support them." The declaration was later ratified in December 1689, and remains a cornerstone of British law. Wing E-1489.
