Additional Details

This official manuscript court-martial proceeding from the War of the Spanish Succession is mostly dedicated to the case of Lieutenant John Saygriffe, accused of cowardice at the Battle of Wijnendale. The cases of several other soldiers accused of theft and murder are dispatched more quickly. At the bottom of the final page is a five-line note signed by Marlborough, concluding with a decision of clemency: "I have thought fit to grant, and do accordingly extend, mercy and pardon to the two latter, and order them to be releas'd and return'd to their respective troops."
