THE ENGLISH REMAIN NERVOUS ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON (ENGLAND--1798.) Drumming Out of the Regiment!! Hand-colored etching, 14 x 17 3/4 inches; minor edge wear and faint creasing. London: William Holland, 7 February 1798

Additional Details

Charles Howard, Duke of Norfolk, served as Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding. Early in 1798, at a large banquet, he toasted "our Sovereign's health: the majesty of the people." This was too democratic for the taste of King George III, who soon dismissed him from office. In this print, Norfolk is marched out of his post with a placard reading "Washington" and quoting his unfortunate toast. War Secretary Henry Dundas leads the procession while Fox and Pitt look on, and the king mutters "Drum away, Billy!! I wish they were all drummed out!!"
