Additional Details

After 1924, Josephine Baker spent most of her time in France, but she was certainly not forgotten in her native country. This photograph shows an NAACP-sponsored luncheon to celebrate just her third return to the states in 27 years, part of a "Josephine Baker Day" which also included a 27-car motorcade and reviewing stand. Here she is seen with the French consul; her rumored lover and former co-star Bessie Buchanan; her French husband Jo Bouillon; family court judge Hubert Delany; and Caroline Klein Simon, a state Commissioner Against Discrimination.
