McDaniel is best known for her Academy Award-wnning perfornance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind, but she was active in film, television and radio throughout the 1930s and 1940s, following a career as a blues singer in the 1920s. In this formal publicity photograph, she is shown elegantly attired on a staircase. The photograph is inscribed to Edith Linzey; a woman by that name (1919-2001) was a member of the only African-American W.A.C. unit to serve overseas during World War Two.
