Additional Details

Hank Ballard (1927-2003) and the Midnighters were pioneers in the transition from R&B to rock music in the early 1950s. He wrote "The Twist" in 1959, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

This colorful illustrated poster for a 1963 concert at Washington's Capitol Arena is signed by three band members: "Best wishes, Norman Midnighters [Thrasher], to Fred"; "Best wishes, Henry Hank Ballard, 1963, Midnighters"; and "Best in life always, Lawson [Smith]." Several of the band's hits are mentioned including "The Twist," as well as opening act "Garnell Cooper and his Kinfolks Orchestra."
