The photograph was taken by Black photographer Villard Paddio (circa 1894-1947) of New Orleans, who was Armstrong's favorite for years. Provenance: collection of record producer and historian Frank Driggs (1930-2011); published in 1994 as part of the Driggs Collection in Miller's "Armstrong: A Cultural Legacy," page 52; exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art and in a subsequent national touring exhibition of the same name from 1994 to 1996 which closed at the National Portrait Gallery; Swann sale, 26 March 2015, part of lot 477.
