Additional Details

The magazine covered a wide variety of musical acts ranging from soul to funk to disco to jazz; the Jackson 5 were special favorites, and the editors had not warmed up to hip hop by 1979. Columns included concert news; record reviews; content on film, television, Broadway, and sports stars; unabashed celebrity gossip; and letters to the editor. The publishers were Ken Jones (1938-1992), otherwise known as the first Black news anchorman in Los Angeles, and his wife Regina. It was published from 1966 to 1982.

Soul printed numerous regional issues in conjunction with local radio stations, each with some additional local news and radio promotional content. This mixed run includes some editions issued for KGFJ (Los Angeles), WVON (Chicago), WWRL (New York), KDIA (San Francisco), WLIB (New York), and from 1974 onward the National Edition.
