Additional Details

Douglas Turner Ward was the founder of the Negro Ensemble Company. "Happy Ending" and "Day of Absence" debuted as a pair of one-act plays in off-off-Broadway New York in 1965. After 15 successful months, the production headed west to San Francisco. "Day of Absence" became Ward's best-known work, with Black actors in "whiteface" portraying a small Southern town where all Black residents suddenly disappeared.
