Robeson's groundbreaking portrayal of Othello opened at Broadway's Sam S. Shubert Theatre on 19 October 1943. This program dates from just three weeks into the play's 296-performance run--still a record for Shakespeare on Broadway. The show's visionary director Margaret Webster, who also signed the cover, also appeared on stage as Emelia in this early part of the run.
