Additional Details

Woodie King launched the New Federal Theatre in 1970 with the mission "to integrate minorities and women into the mainstream of American theatre." Their first project was "Black Girl" by J.E. Franklin, which had previously been performed on public television. The production opened at New York's tiny Henry Street Playhouse to rave reviews in May 1971, and then moved to the larger off-Broadway Theatre de Lys on 17 June, winning a Drama Desk award. We trace no other examples at auction.
