Additional Details

This play recontextualized the 1900 Frank Baum novel and 1939 film with an all-Black cast and modern setting. After launching in Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia in 1974, it began a long Broadway run in January 1975, moving from the Majestic Theatre to the Broadway Theatre in 1977. Geoffrey Holder was the director, and Stephanie Mills rose to fame in the starring role as Dorothy. The play was named Best Musical at the April 1975 Tony Awards, along with several other honors.

The poster was by the famed graphic designer Milton Glaser, creator of the "I Love New York" logo.
