Additional Details

John Craige Carter (1892-1955) spent most of his life running Reynolda, the palatial Winston-Salem, NC estate of tobacco mogul R.J. Reynolds, his widow, and then their daughter Mary Reynolds Babcock. His obituary noted his title as "Major-Domo" and made clear that his status transcended a typical household servant. He arranged a dinner for President Truman at the estate, the giant Christmas tree in front of his own home was a local attraction in its own right, and his employer noted his "broad interest in all civic affairs . . . I have never known one of higher integrity."
