Additional Details

Anna Julia Cooper writes to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, on behalf of Charles Harris Wesley, professor (1868-1964) of history at Howard University. She asks that Wesley be appointed successor to Benjamin L. Gaskins on the Board of Education. . . "giving us a man who is primarily an educator, a Christian gentleman, a quiet thoughtful, sincere man. . ." "Dr Wesley has no axes to grind," says Cooper," and would, I am sure bring to [the] education of colored folk in the District a wise, sympathetic and conservative insight." Unfortunately, Dr. Wesley was not appointed, despite Ms. Cooper's imprecations.
