Thomas Dixon''s immensely popular and immensely racist novel "The Clansman" was published in 1905. Ten years later, D. W. Griffith''s film version of the novel "Birth of a Nation" was released in U. S. theatres, causing an uproar from the black community and civic minded whites. This romantic version of Reconstruction and the formation of the Klan prompted an immediate reaction from the recently formed NAACP. To this day, showings of the film cause protests.
