Additional Details

The Birth of a Nation remains controversial today, generally regarded as either a pernicious work of Ku Klux Klan propaganda, a pioneering artistic achievement, or both. This program dates from the film's fourth week of screenings at Philadelphia's Forrest Theatre. It provides a complete cast list (including Lillian Gish as Elsie Stoneman), an historical essay titled "A Nation is Born," and a shorter apology titled "The Play's Message of Peace."
