Additional Details

The author spent nearly a quarter century angling the waters of North America in pursuit of native fish. Upon the capture of each new species Harris's companion, John L. Petrie, painted the likeness of the specimen immediately to best reproduce the natural color of the fresh fish. The chromolithography of the present plates does a fine job of capturing that immediate and natural feel of each fish. So keen was Harris to have the viewer know the efforts taken to portray the naturalism, he includes an engraved plate of himself standing next to Petrie as he works up a portrait in oil. Harris was serious in his ambitions, imagining a work comprising 80 plates and sparing no economy in its execution. Regrettably, due to financial obstacles, the project was reeled in half way to completion. Bennett 51; Litchfield 65; Bruns H80; Nissen ZBI 1840.
