It contains 55 letters by authors: 24 of them declined the offer, including Edward Albee, Philip Auster, John Barth, Annie Dillard, William Gaddis, Ken Kesey, Stanley Kunitz, and Anne Rice. Their answers differ greatly and are very telling about their feelings toward Fitzgerald. Among the 31 who accepted were Alice Adams, Nicolas Delbanco, Nelson DeMille, Don DeLillo, Allan Gurganus, John McFee, Arthur Miller, Reynolds Price, and Annie Proulx. The essays of those who accepted were published in the final version.
