number 25 of only 50 copies signed by weil and van dyke (the total edition). The artists first produced forty interpretive paintings based on Joyce's dream-inspired writings. They concurred with FitzGerald that the epiphanies fell into four categories: Death, Dreams, Games (primarily word games or puns), and Planes, and designed the shape and proportion of the book based on Joyce's original manuscript pages. The book's pages are designed in accordion folds so that phrases are first read out of context and are then brought into focus. The watercolor maquette for the "Death" section created by Weil is a blending of nine separate images transformed into a sequential statement that "evoked the sorrows and terrors of these five epiphanies about the death" of Joyce's brother. A masterly modern livre d'artiste.
