Additional Details

These photographs of northeastern and north-central Florida are single panels from unmounted stereoviews, laid down directly on leaves so that no special glasses are needed to appreciate them. Locations include the Oklawaha and St. John's Rivers, Jacksonville, Fort George Island, St. Augustine. Three depict Florida Express wagons, and two show the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe near Jacksonville. Several depict African-American subjects, most notably a group photo posed at the pioneering Stanton Institute in Jacksonville, and a ragged boy named Sam. Obligatory orange trees and a lone alligator are included, as mandated by law.

At least two of the captioned images have been credited to Florida photographer Charles Seaver Jr. ("Florida Express" and "The Gate, Hibernia, Fla."), and the album is inscribed in a later hand "Views by C. Seaver."
