A complete set of Hyatt's exhaustive oral histories collected throughout the South. From the introduction: "Throughout the following pages, 1606 strange-world believers and I will talk about magic rites and spirits--talking on more than 3000 old-fashioned Ediphone and Telediphone cylinders . . . a serious investigation of superstition." The ratio of informants was "1605 Negroes to one white man," with interviews conducted from 1936 onward. The set was self-published over eight years, and limited to a few hundred copies. A promised sixth volume containing an index was apparently never issued.
