(FOOD AND DRINK.) COOKS AND STEWARDS. Littleton Williams Boarding House for Colered (sic) Cooks and Stewards, Quai Casimir Delavique, No 9. Single 8 x 10 partially printed bill, accomplished by hand (writing quite faded); creases where folded. Le Havre, 1859

Additional Details

A very unusual bill for 76 francs for a colored ship's cook and steward from the American ship George West. The fact that this boarding house was specifically for colored crew members, hints at a certain lack of welcome. It's possible that Haitian independence might still have been the cause of some animosity. The house was conveniently located on the quai (dock) at the famed port of Le Havre.
