foujita's copy, signed by him in english and japanese, with translated words in his hand, and dated paris 1913, which was his first recorded visit to Paris and this, possibly, among the first books he purchased there. Rouveyre, a Western-trained artist, studied Japanese brush stroke technique and modified it into a Western idiom in this collection of female nudes. Foujita, who had been trained in classical Japanese brush stroke art clearly studied and was influenced by Rouveyre's techniques for his works created in the West. His inked and penciled translation appears on the half-title, his inked signature on the Preface title, and his pencil translation of 15 words on the first page of its text.
