first edition, rare. no copies located by oclc. Lewis Hayden (1811-1889), ex-slave, Republican party worker and Prince Hall Masonic leader, writes to Judge Simms: "The dark day of slavery is fast passing away, and as its shadows recede, it is our duty as colored men, who were the subjects of oppression, to advance toward light and knowledge . . . A question now arises, whether the Masonic system or institution in any way aids in our search for truth, which, to man is the true light."
