Additional Details

Few ships have as devoted a following as the "Normandie." She was, without doubt, the most beautiful liner to ply the trans-Atlantic route, with spacious common areas and magnificent detailing. She was a quadruple-screw ship which began service in 1935. She was taken over by the U. S. in 1939 and renamed "Lafayette." While docked at a pier in New York, she caught fire and sank. Hopes of salvaging her came to naught and she was dismantled in 1947.
