(GARFIELD ASSASSINATION.) GUITEAU, CHARLES. Photograph Signed, cabinet card bust portrait by C.M. Bell, showing him in suit and tie. Signed on the mount below the image. Photographer's imprint on the mount at bottom. On the verso is printed a notice from the photographer, indicating that the negative was taken "in the jail in the city of Washington on February 6th, 1882." Approximately 5x4 inches (image), approximately 6 1/2x4 1/4 inches overall; short closed tear in top edge of photograph. [Washington, 1882]

Additional Details

Guiteau (1841-1882) was a corrupt lawyer and deranged miscreant who assassinated President James Garfield. He claimed divine inspiration and was convinced he would be acquited, after which he planned to run for the presidency. He was convicted in January 1882 and hanged on June 30th the same year.
