The important African-American photographer James Van Der Zee (1886-1983) worked extensively with Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association in the mid-1920s. Garvey apparently signed one of these portraits for Van Der Zee, who then created this copy print for later sale. On verso is an inked stamp from Van Der Zee's GGG Photo Studio at its final address, 272 Lenox Avenue in Harlem, where he worked from 1942 until his retirement.
